Is the G 580's "G Turn" (360 degree spin) really a gimmick or will it be useful?

The G 580 Edition One is one of the most talked about features of the new Mercedes G, and it can perform a 360-degree turn on the spot, known as the 'G-Turn'. The independent control of each wheel's electric motor makes this capability possible, as the vehicle can essentially rotate in place. Of course, it’s a very impressive party trick, but opinions are divided on whether this feature is practical or just a gimmick to drum up publicity. Some say it's good for tight off road situations or tight urban maneuvering, others argue it’s an unnecessary feature which most owners will never use. The debate also extends to whether the development resources for this feature would have been better used improving range or some other more practical aspect of the vehicle.

But it's definitely a gimmick, and it's a cool one! I can see it being useful maybe once in a blue moon, but otherwise it’s just for showing off.
