Is the G 580's "G Turn" (360 degree spin) really a gimmick or will it be useful?

The G 580 Edition One is one of the most talked about features of the new Mercedes G, and it can perform a 360-degree turn on the spot, known as the 'G-Turn'. The independent control of each wheel's electric motor makes this capability possible, as the vehicle can essentially rotate in place. Of course, it’s a very impressive party trick, but opinions are divided on whether this feature is practical or just a gimmick to drum up publicity. Some say it's good for tight off road situations or tight urban maneuvering, others argue it’s an unnecessary feature which most owners will never use. The debate also extends to whether the development resources for this feature would have been better used improving range or some other more practical aspect of the vehicle.

But it's definitely a gimmick, and it's a cool one! I can see it being useful maybe once in a blue moon, but otherwise it’s just for showing off.

I can see this being incredibly useful in off road situations as someone who's been stuck on tight trails before. It's not just for show.

It's a gimmick and it’s practical. It has some use, but really, most buyers will just use it to impress their friends in parking lots.

I think we underestimate how useful this could be in cities. Think about parallel parking, or trying to turn around in an alley. This could be a game changer for urban driving.

This is a waste of engineering resources. Instead of this party trick, they should have been improving range or charging speed.

I love it as a tech enthusiast. It's what electric drivetrains can do. It’s not super practical, but it does push the boundaries of what cars can do.

It's also a pain for the tires and drivetrain. Yeah, it looks cool, but what price will the car pay for it?

It's a great safety feature. In off road situations, it may be critical to be able to reorient your vehicle quickly in emergency situations.

I think it's hilarious. Picture the car meet where you pull up and just start spinning in place. It’s worth it just for the reactions!
