Is the driving experience of the BYD Seal too "ICE-like" for EV enthusiasts?
The BYD Seal is aimed at traditional ICE car drivers switching to EVs. According to some reviewers as well as owners the driving experience more emulates that of a standard car, with a softer acceleration curve and less obtrusive regenerative braking than other EVs. The debate follows whether the Seal strikes the right balance between being familiar and contributing to discernibility of the EV design language. Some say it's a clever way for the company to ease the transition for those new to EVs, while others say it doesn't take full advantage of electric powertrains' perks. One thing the discussion often circles around is one pedal driving, instant torque delivery, and how much an EV should be different from ICE vehicles in terms of driving dynamics.
Actually I do like the more familiar driving feel. Not everyone wants to go back and relearn how to drive because they switched to an EV.
Disagree. That whole point of an EV is to go with new tech and new driving styles. It just feels like the Seal is stuck in the past.
It's a smart move by BYD. This is not about EV enthusiasts, this is about the mass market. It will help more people switch.
I test drove one and was disappointed that it didn’t have one pedal driving. The Seal misses out on this one of the best features of EVs.
Everything else about the driving experience is fine, but I wish they'd let me choose between traditional and EV-enthusiast drive modes.
Familiar feel of the Seal was reassuring as a long time ICE driver. That made the transition to an EV much less daunting.
BYD is playing it too safe. Instead, they should be doing what electric cars can do that gas cars cannot.
