Is the Camry TRD a 'real' performance car?

As a sportier, more performance based version of the standard Camry, the Toyota Camry TRD (Toyota Racing Development) was brought out. It's sportier looking, has sport tuned suspension, and some performance upgrades. Toyota's move to add the V6 to the Camry lineup was widely viewed as an effort to make the Camry lineup a bit more exciting, and draw in driving enthusiasts. But opinions differ on whether the Camry TRD is actually a performance car. There are those that say it’s just a cosmetic package with some minor mechanical changes, and there are those that argue it represents a big step up in driving dynamics for the Camry. Is the TRD version a real sports sedan for the Camry, or just marketing hype? So let's see if the Camry TRD is really worth the attention of performance car enthusiasts, or if it's just dressing up for a segment in which it doesn't really belong.

It's not a full performance car, but it's a big step in the right direction. The handling improvements are real.

No nah, just a appearance package with a slightly stiffer suspension. It needs more power, and better brakes, for it to be a true performance car.

It's pretty sporty for a Camry. Compared to real performance sedans, it is something of a let down. It's more like a 'sport appearance' package.

I don't think you can dismiss it completely. It's not a track monster, but it's more fun to drive than a regular Camry.

For Camry buyers, but not enthusiasts, it's a performance car. If you want a little more excitement without sacrificing reliability, it’s perfect.

It's like diet cola; it lets you taste the real thing, but it's not quite the real thing. It's a good effort, though.

It's not a true performance car, I'd call it a 'performance inspired' car. It has the looks and some of the feel but not the whole package.

The TRD will probably feel like a real performance car to the average driver. It depends on what you're used to driving.
