Is the Bear 650’s lack of tubeless tires a deal breaker for its adventure touring credentials?
When Royal Enfield rolled out the Bear 650 with tube type tyres, it has kicked off a debate among motorcycle enthusiasts, more so those who are interested in adventure touring. One of the main reasons that tubeless tires are preferred is their ability to hold air even after a puncture so the rider can plug the tire and go on their journey. It is especially valuable on long tours, or in remote areas. The question of whether the Bear 650 is an adventure touring bike has been brought up due to its tube type tires on a bike that’s marketed with scrambler like capabilities. Others say this severely compromises the bike's versatility and off road credibility. Some argue that tubeless tires are far superior to tube types, however, the classic wire spoke wheel aesthetic outweighs the practical benefits of tubeless tires and others argue tube type tires are more than adequate for the kind of light off roading most Bear 650 owners do.
Absolute deal-breaker. Any bike with adventure touring aspirations needs tubeless tires. What RE dropped the ball on here.
That’s not ideal but it’s not the end of the world. You see plenty of tube tire bikes on tours. If you just carry a spare tube, no problems.
People are overreacting, I think. The Bear 650 isn’t designed for hardcore off road use. Tube tires are fine for what you are going to use them for.
I wish RE had gone tubeless as a person who’s had to change a tube on the side of the road. It’s a big convenience factor.
Not a deal breaker, but disappointing none the less. Yet the Bear 650 still looks like an appealing overall package.
It just goes to show that RE doesn’t really understand the adventure touring market. Any bike in this category should come tubeless.
Tube tires look and feel classic, and I actually prefer them. You don’t need cutting edge technology for everything.
It's a missed opportunity. At least RE could have given tubeless as an option too, to cater both to traditionalists and adventure enthusiasts.
