Is the Aprilia SXR 160 a bike for new riders, or is it too powerful for beginners?
With a 160cc engine and maxi-scooter design, the Aprilia SXR 160 is more powerful and a different way to ride from the usual 100-125cc scooters that many new riders begin with in India. This makes me wonder if it is suitable for those just starting their two wheeler journey. While it could give you more confidence in some situations (such as highway riding or carrying a passenger), it might be too much for inexperienced riders or intimidating. The weight, balance, and throttle response of the scooter also matter a lot as to how easy it will be for a new rider to adapt to it. Furthermore, the SXR 160's higher price tag compared to entry level scooters may also play a role in deciding for new riders who aren't sure whether they'll stick with two wheeler riding in the long run. The SXR 160's extra performance: boon for beginners, or will it be better if they start with a smaller one and work their way up?
I rode the SXR 160 first and I feel it is a good beginner scooter. It's not overwhelming, but the power is there when you need it. But the stability actually helped me feel more confident as a new rider.
For a complete newbie, it is just too much. If you haven’t ridden before, it can be hard to manage the weight and power. It’s better to start small and work your way up.
It really depends on the person I'd say. The SXR is a good choice if you're a cautious learner because you won't outgrow the SXR too quickly. If you’re nervous about riding, maybe start with something less powerful.
I don't think it's a good idea for absolute beginners because I teach people to ride. It’s an issue with the weight, especially when trying to balance at low speeds or park. But it's a great second scooter.
I bought the SXR as my first scooter and I don’t regret it. It was a bit of a change but I'm glad I did not have to go from a smaller scooter. Riding within your limits is all it’s about.
In my opinion it is overkill for a new rider. The cost, not just for the power, but for the power. So is it really worth risking dropping an expensive scooter and potentially damaging it when you still learning? Start cheap, then upgrade.
I would say it’s a good option for mature beginners. For those of you starting to ride in your late 20s or older, the SXR's stability and power can be a reassuring thing. Though it’s not a good choice for teenage first time riders.
For a petite rider, the SXR was too heavy for a beginner. I was never comfortable with its weight. Love this scooter but wish I had started lighter.
If you live in a place with good roads and light traffic, it's a good starter. It may be too much to handle for learning in busy city conditions, though. Context matters a lot.
A year into it, I started on a 110cc scooter and then moved on to the SXR. In fact, I'm happy I did it that way. The SXR was much smoother to learn the basics on than a smaller scooter.
