Is the Alfa Romeo MiTo's DNA system full of gimmicks or is it actually useful?

In addition to all the above, the Alfa Romeo MiTo features a unique DNA (Dynamic, Normal, All-weather) system that lets you choose to alter almost anything the car does. One of the things they boast about is that this feature provides the MiTo with three distinct 'personalities' suited to different driving conditions. But then car enthusiasts themselves are debating about whether this system really improves the driving experience or it is just a way to market something. Some say it changes the car’s behaviour dramatically, while others say that the differences are barely perceptible. The conversation usually centers around how much the DNA system influences throttle response, steering feel, and all around handling in actual driving conditions. There’s also curiosity about how this system compares to similar features found on other cars and if it’s something that might be a selling point when looking at the MiTo.

I’ve had my MiTo for a year now, but honestly, the DNA system is pretty cool. In Dynamic mode it really wakes up the car. It's much sharpener throttle response and the steering is more direct. It’s good for those twisty back roads.

I mean, it’s mostly just a gimmick, I think. You can feel a slight difference, but it’s not like it changes the car. I mostly leave mine in Normal and don’t really play around with the others.

In fact, the All weather mode is quite useful. It helps to soften everything up and the car to feel more planted in slippery conditions. A couple of times during winter, it saved my bacon.

I'd call it somewhere between useful and gimmicky. It's not life changing but it adds a little bit of versatility to the car. I question if that's worth the extra complexity.

I've seen a few MiTos come in with DNA system issues as a mechanic. It’s something else that can possibly go wrong. Nice when it works, but it’s not very reliable.

The MiTo's DNA comes across more starkly than in other cars that I've driven with such systems. It’s not a placebo effect, you can really feel the difference, especially in Dynamic mode.

The feature itself is cool, but I wish they went further with it. If it could adjust the suspension as well, that would really change things.

It's useful, but not essential. It’s a nice thing to play with, but I wouldn’t say it’s a make-or-break feature if you’re thinking about buying a MiTo.
