Is the 4XPLOR system of the Scorpio-N actually useful or just marketing hype?
The Mahindra Scorpio-N comes with a 4XPLOR intelligent terrain management system which promises to conquer any terrain. Different driving modes such as Zip, Zap and Zoom are included, along with an electric shift on the fly four wheel drive system. But few SUV buyers ever take their vehicles off road, and some say such systems are more about marketing than real use. The debate is whether the average Scorpio-N owner would actually use these features or whether they'd just be paying for features they would never need. Some also question whether the system actually improves off–road performance all that much over a standard 4x4 system. That has led to discussions about what real world value these advanced terrain management systems have in everyday use in an SUV.
I took the Scorpio-N off road and can verify that the 4XPLOR system is legit. It really did make a difference on tricky terrain. Most owners won't use it to its full capacity but it's there when you need it.
It's mostly marketing fluff. I drove both the Scorpio-N and older 4x4s without fancy terrain systems and there’s no huge difference for the average user. If you really need it, save your money and get a simpler 4x4.
The 4XPLOR system is not a must have, but a nice to have. It's useful for the few times you may go off road but not the extra cost if you are mostly a city driver. It’s not so much of a necessity as it is peace of mind.
I think it's a bit of both. Mahindra's marketing oversells the system, but the system does work. It won’t make the Scorpio-N into a hardcore off roader, but it does make it more capable than your average SUV. It's up to the buyer if that is worth the price.
The 4XPLOR system is one that I enjoy as an off road enthusiast. It’s not just marketing, it actually helps less experienced drivers safely navigate tough terrain. However, it’s no silver bullet to replace skill and experience.
The real value of 4XPLOR is in how it is used on a day to day basis. City driving and on highways, there is a noticeable difference in the different driving modes. The thing is, it's not just about off roading.
I would say that it’s more of a safety feature than anything else. You may never go off road, but having that extra capability can be a life saver in the case of heavy rain or muddy roads.
