Is Marazzo's diesel-only engine lineup a smart move, or a limitation in today's market?
In contrast to many car makers that are moving away from diesel, especially in smaller cars, Mahindra has decided to sell the Marazzo only in diesel engine options. Potential buyers and industry watchers have been at odds over this decision. Diesel still makes sense for an MPV, say supporters, as it delivers better fuel efficiency and torque for heavy loads or large families. But competitors say diesel's future is in doubt as environmental rules tighten and tastes switch in cities. That debate often extends to discussions about whether diesel engines are viable in India in the long term, whether hybrid or electric MPVs are possible, and whether Mahindra has shot itself in the foot by not offering petrol options with the Marazzo. It also discusses the various driving characteristics of diesel vs petrol engines and what this means for the MPV experience.
Diesel still works for an MPV. With better torque for hauling people and luggage, and better fuel efficiency, it’s a big plus for budget conscious families. Mahindra knows their market.
