Is KTM's 690 SMC-R worth the premium price over the Japanese supermotos like the DRZ400SM?
The KTM 690 SMC-R is priced far above the level of popular Japanese supermotos such as the Suzuki DRZ400SM. The price difference has sent riders debating whether the KTM's performance, features, and build quality are worth the extra cost. The 690 SMC-R has more power, more advanced electronics, and higher-spec components, but also brings with it higher maintenance requirements and costs. On the flip side, the DRZ400SM is a bike that’s famous for its simplicity, reliability, and lower running costs. It’s a toss-up between the extra performance and features of the KTM or the more budget-friendly Japanese options that are plenty for your riding style. In this article we will take a look at what the pros and cons are of investing in the premium KTM and choosing a more affordable Japanese supermoto.
Absolutely worth it. The 690 SMC-R is in an entirely different league performance-wise. You know, it’s cars, but it’s a Civic versus a BMW M3; it’s the same thing.
I have both, and I have to say, I had more fun on the DRZ. The KTM is too refined, too powerful for real supermoto hooliganism. Plus, you don’t have to worry about dropping a DRZ.
If you’re doing a mix of street and occasional track days, the 690 is worth it. A DRZ, or a converted dirt bike, is a better choice for pure off-road or beginner riders.
It depends on your budget and your goals. The 690 is great but overkill for most people. For 90% of what most people need, the DRZ can do it at half the price.
The technology itself justifies the premium. The 690 SMC R has ABS, traction control, and ride modes to make it a much more versatile, street-friendly bike.
I rode a DRZ and then upgraded to the 690. I'm glad I started on the Suzuki, but every way the KTM is better. I learned skills without the fear of an even more powerful bike.
If you’re serious about supermoto riding, the 690 SMC R is worth every penny. You can grow with it; you'll outgrow a DRZ pretty fast if you're pushing hard.
