In real world riding, how will the Flying Flea S6's performance compare to other traditional ICE scramblers?
As Royal Enfield has introduced an electric scrambler, the Flying Flea S6, there has been discussion about how it will stack up to traditional ICE scramblers on the roads. We know electric motorcycles for their instant torque and their smooth power delivery, but there are limitations: range anxiety and longer refueling (charging) times. The S6’s performance characteristics are being debated by riders, from what they’ll do in the city and on the weekend trails. Key points of comparison include acceleration, top speed, range and the bike behavior in different terrains. The effect of weight distribution, caused by the battery location, on handling and off road capability is also being explored. Motorcycle enthusiasts are speculating as to whether the S6's ability to match or exceed the all-round performance of ICE scramblers is actually possible.
I think it will smoke ICE bikes in the city. Instant torque for the win! In terms of traditional bikes though, they might still have the advantage on long stretches of highway or long off road sessions.
Although there’s no engine braking or clutch control, this could be tricky in technical off road situations. There, ICE scramblers still have an advantage.
On loose surfaces, it could be amazing if they nail the power delivery. Super smooth traction control can be provided by electric motors.
It's going to be quieter on trails, which is good for nature lovers. No more scaring away wildlife.
My biggest concern is the weight of the batteries. Usually ICE scramblers are pretty light and nimble.
In fact, it could be better for novice off road riders. You don’t have to worry about stalling out or being in the wrong gear.
Range anxiety is real. At least, you can have a small gas can for emergencies with a gas bike. Not so easy with batteries.
