If the Qashqais are so mediocre, why do so many people buy them?

The Nissan Qashqai has been roundly criticised, and has received lukewarm reviews, but it's still one of the best selling cars in many markets. This seeming contradiction between popularity and reputation has fueled debates about consumer preferences, marketing effectiveness and the difference between what the average car buyer and the enthusiast want. Aggressive pricing and marketing are blamed by some for the Qashqai's success, while others argue that it really does better meet the needs of many families than other alternatives. However, there is a disconnect between sales figures and critical opinion, and that begs questions about what most car buyers really care about and whether the automotive media's perspective matches up with those of mainstream consumers.

Car reviewers and enthusiasts aren’t representative of average buyers, that’s why. What most people want is something that’s reliable, comfortable, and easy to live with. The Qashqai does all of this without being a bank breaker.

In fact, the Qashqai is a decent all round car. It doesn’t do anything great, but it does everything decently without any major flaws. That's more than enough for most people.

I guess, they are everywhere. Because people see their neighbors and friends driving Qashqais, they think they must be good. It's the car world's equivalent of "no one ever got fired for buying IBM."

The Qashqai is a sweet spot for a lot of families. It is the right size, has a high driving position and feels safe. Not everyone wants to have a car that handles or 0-60 well – they just want something practical and familiar.

Everything is marketing and dealership pushes. Nissan is great at giving finance deals and flooding the market with them. In fact, most buyers don't do much research beyond what the salesperson tells them.
