How will the launch of an Avenger 400 affect Bajaj’s current lineup, especially the Dominar?
The Dominar 400 is the flagship sports tourer of Bajaj which covers many segments of the motorcycle. Avenger 400 would be a big addition to their range and would cover the same engine capacity and price point as some of their existing models. This creates problems with product positioning, market segmentation and how Bajaj would differentiate these models to prevent internal competition. It also gives pause for thought on how it could impact the development and marketing strategies of other bikes in their product library what less than about 250-400cc.
It could actually complement the Dominar, I think. Cruiser fans would love the Avenger, while the Dominar remains the sport tourer of choice. One man's meat is another man's poison.
Some Dominar sales will be cannibalized initially, but it could also bring more people to Bajaj showrooms. They’d have to market them as separate experiences.
The real question is pricing. But if they price it too close to the Dominar, it could get confusing. They would have to make clear separation in the lineup.
Elevating the entire brand could be a good move. Bajaj with two strong offerings in 400cc might help them be perceived as a premium manufacturer.
I'm afraid it might end up letting the Dominar slide. But Bajaj doesn’t have the best track record of keeping multiple high end models on the road at the same time.
Perhaps they’ll leverage it as an opportunity to make the Dominar more upmarket. But raise it to 500cc and slot the Avenger 400 into the lineup.
Dominar sales could benefit from it in fact. People might come in to see the Avenger and end up liking the sportier Dominar. It could also mean more sales overall.
