How true is the Alfa Romeo 147 1.6 as a driver's car or just a pretty face?
For a brand synonymous with passion and performance, what does the Alfa Romeo 147 1.6 drive like? But some say, while it's undeniably stylish, its smaller engine won't provide the thrilling drive Alfa is renowned for. Some say even with the 1.6 liter engine, the car's handling and character mean it's fun to drive. So, let's submerge ourselves in the contention of whether this diminutive Alfa comes with an engaging driving experience faithful proponents desire, or if it all rests on appearance rather than substance. Does the 147 1.6 hit the sweet spot between everyday usability and Alfa Romeo magic or does it fail to live up to the marque's sporting heritage?

It’s a driver’s car … as long as it’s not in the shop. Apart from classic Alfa reliability issues, it’s a joy when it’s running right.

Let’s be real, the vast majority of people buy Alfas for the looks first. The 147 1.6 surprised me, though, because it’s so good on a twisty road.

The 1.6 is the Alfa for the thinking person. Less maintenance, better fuel economy, but still with that Italian flair. It's the smart choice.

I’ve had one for years and it still makes me smile when I drive it. There is definitely more to it than just looks.

But, if you're looking for Ferrari performance, you will be disappointed. For a compact hatch, it's a blast. It's all about context.

I'd say 70% driver's car, 30% pretty face. The package is pretty good other than the engine is a bit weak. It's all about the experience.

It’s perfect as a daily driver. Not too powerful to be constantly fighting tickets, but enough pep to be fun. It also looks like a supercar, plus it turns heads.

It's both! It looks gorgeous and while it's not the quickest, it handles like an Alfa. It's a great way to get into the brand.

Pretty face, for sure. For a real Alfa experience you need at least the 2.0 or the GTA version. The 1.6 is just for posers.

Absolutely a driver's car! It isn't the most powerful 1.6 but that chassis and steering feel are what impresses. It's like the go-kart for adults.
