How reliable is the Nissan Patrol really, or is it all hype?
It is well known that the Nissan Patrol is very reliable, especially in deserts. A large number of owners swear by their Patrols, which they say can run to hundreds of thousands of kilometers without much problem. Others claim that this reputation is extra outdated or overstated, and level to explicit mannequin 12 months or engine variations. Often the debate involves comparing Patrol reliability to other rugged SUVs such as the Toyota Land Cruiser. A few claim the Patrol is unbeatable, but others insist it’s good, but not exceptional. The Patrol’s overall reliability and longevity are also discussed with maintenance costs and availability of parts in various parts of the world.
Patrols are tanks. We've had one in our family for 15 years and it's never failed us. But these things are built to last and regular maintenance is key.
They are good, but not invincible. The ZD30 engine was a real problem. Toyota Land Cruisers are probably more reliable overall, but the Patrols aren't far behind.
That varies by model year and how it's been treated. If you take care of your Patrol, it can easily do 500,000 km, but let any car go and it will start to give you problems. But the older models were definitely tougher though.
I don’t think the reliability is as overhyped as everyone makes it out to be. They’re solid vehicles but I’ve had my fair share of issues with mine. Electrical systems can be a pain and parts aren’t always easy to find.
I own both Patrols and Land Cruisers and I'd say Patrols are more fun to drive, but slightly less reliable. But they’re a lot more reliable than the majority of modern SUVs.
There is a well deserved reputation, especially for the older models. All the added tech means more potential points of failure, but the new ones are still reliable. It's a trade-off.
Where it counts, engine, transmission and chassis, patrols are reliable. You might have little issues pop up here and there, but the guts of the vehicle are incredibly solid.
