How much better is the Pulsar P150’s engine refinement compared to the older Pulsar models?
The Pulsar P150 is something Bajaj has touted improved engine refinement as one of the key upgrades. According to the company, it also worked to cut vibrations and make it overall smoother when traveling faster. Many Pulsar fans have been interested in this, because the older models were generally known for peppy performance, but were criticized for vibration in certain RPM ranges. Whether this refinement has been at the cost of the characteristic Pulsar 'feel' and whether they have substantially improved the riding experience is the subject of great debate among riders. This refinement is also discussed in comparison with other 150cc bikes which have been setting high standards for engine smoothness.
I have extensively ridden the old and new Pulsars and I can definitely say the P150's engine is a big step up in refinement. At high speeds, the vibrations are noticeably reduced. Although it's lost a little bit of that raw Pulsar feel, the smoother ride is worth it when it comes to commuting daily.
I think the refinement is not that significant. Yeah, it definitely is a bit smoother, but it's also lost some of that punchy acceleration that made Pulsars exciting to drive. Sanitizing the riding experience is fine but I’d rather have a little bit of vibration and a little bit more character.
There’s refinement, but it’s not class leading. The Honda Unicorn bikes still do feel smoother. Of course, it’s a good compromise for a Pulsar – refined enough for comfort, but still with the sporty flavor.
The engine, I believe Bajaj has done a great job with. Smooth when you want it to be, but still Pulsar grunt when it is open. What they've done is mature the bike without fully changing its personality.
I can say as a mechanic that the improvements in refinement are more than skin deep. It should mean better longevity as the engine internals and balancing are much better. It's not only a matter of ride feel but also a matter of keeping the engine healthy at the end of the day.
I don’t think the refinement is worth it. A little smoother, it is also less exciting. The old Pulsar was a raw thing, and you felt wired to the machine. Now this one is a tad too polished for my liking, I guess.
This refinement is just right, coming from other 150cc bikes. It's still characterful enough to be enjoyable, but smooth enough for comfortable daily rides. It’s a good middle ground that will suit both new riders and Pulsar loyalists.
