How long of a distance do you get on the KTM 690 SMC-R?
Debates have raged about how capable the KTM 690 SMC R is as a long-distance machine, as it is really only intended for aggressive street and light off-road use. Its single-cylinder engine and lightweight chassis are applauded for their performance in urban environments and on twisty roads, but opinions differ when it comes to extended highway miles. According to some riders, its upright seating position and quick handling make it a surprisingly comfortable long ride, while for others, its lack of wind protection and buzzy engine at higher speeds are downsides. Fuel capacity and range have also been talked about, with some owners altering their tanks to increase range. Moreover, touring is mentioned as a potential issue in the firm seat and vibrations from the single-cylinder engine. The result has been some interesting conversations about the versatility of supermotos in general and if the 690 SMC R can really be considered an all-rounder.

With the right mods (bigger tank, better seat, small fairing), it can be a great lightweight tourer.

Long-distance backroad adventures are perfect for it. Highway logs? Not so much.

It's all about mindset. Long trips are a blast if you're okay with more stops and you're light packers.

No way. Its fuel range alone makes it a pain to travel long trips. If you stop every 100 miles, you'll stop a lot.

I’d rather tour on a 690 than a big, heavy adventure bike. It’s much more fun and can take anything you throw at it.

It's doable but not ideal. On long stretches, the single cylinder can become tiring from the vibrations.

I tour on mine all the time. It’s great in the upright position for long days, and the power makes passing a breeze.

Terrible idea. It’s not a tourer, it’s a hooligan bike. After an hour on the highway, you'll be miserable.

It's actually not bad. On mine, I've done 500-mile days. All I need is a comfy seat and maybe a small windscreen.
