How does the Yamaha FZ16 (FZ V1) ride against modern 150cc bikes?
Yamaha FZ16 (FZ V1) was introduced in 2008 and received quick success for its muscular looks and comfortable riding position. It came with a 153cc air cooled engine churning around 14 bhp of power. It was a good low end torque bike with smooth power delivery and was meant for city riding. It also brought with it fat rear tire and digital instrument cluster novelties. But motorcycle technology has come a long way since then. The fuel injected, ABS equipped, LED equipped and better powered engines that come with modern 150cc bikes. In addition, they might also provide better fuel efficiency and additional perks like smartphone connectivity. Even with all of these advantages, many riders still favor the purity and basic feel of old bikes such as the FZ V1. So, does the FZ V1 offer a riding experience that’s better than the one offered by current 150cc motorcycles?
Both have I ridden, and to be honest, the FZ V1 still has it's own. Yes, it might not have the latest tech, but I love the raw mechanical feel of it — more engaging. Sometimes modern bikes are too refined.
Modern bikes are a whole different ball game. The FZ V1 feels outdated now. They are safer (ABS), more powerful, more efficient, and have more features.
That depends on what you're after. The FZ V1 brings a more connected riding experience. You are more in touch with the machine. Modern, or if you prefer, new bikes are the way to go if you want convenience and all the features.
I actually prefer the FZ V1. Newer bikes lack charm, it's simpler and easier to maintain. On top of that, its low end torque is still great for city riding.
Having owned both, I’d say modern bikes are better in almost every way. They are more refined, more efficient and more performant. The only thing the FZ V1 has going for it is the nostalgia.
It's apples and oranges. Some riders will prefer the more raw, analog experience that the FZ V1 offers. Technically they are superior, but they can lack soul.
I think the build quality still goes to the FZ V1. It’s more solid and more durable than some of the newer, plasticky 150cc bikes. It’s showing its age in terms of features and performance.
