How does the Hilux’s image as a 'technical' in conflict zones play out?

The Toyota Hilux, however, have become notorious for show up as a 'technical' (a civilian vehicle used in warfare) in every possible war zone around the globe. The images of Hilux pickup trucks mounted with heavy weapons have become almost iconic in media coverage of a few glaring regional conflicts. The vehicle has a complex and somewhat controversial reputation as a result of this association. From one side, it is the proof of durability and reliability of the Hilux in extreme conditions. On the one hand, it’s cemented to its association with violence and instability in troubled regions. The dual nature of the Hilux’ image causes disruption for both Toyota's brand and the desire of civilian buyers to purchase it and whether this causes moral concerns in some markets.

It's overblown. Other conflicts use plenty of other vehicles, but it is high profile because it is so popular.

Some buyers like the “technical” image. It’s so cool to see a part of modern history and to own a piece of that.

How people us it isn't the fault of the truck. This is no different to that, the Hilux is just a tool and reliability is a virtue regardless of the application.

Toyota needs to be more responsible about where they sell Hiluxes. There is a serious ethical issue as the world's use of the truck in conflicts.

Toyota pays nothing for the advertising. A Hilux reputation of being 'technical' just adds to another Hilux reputation: tough, reliable.

It is problematic, in association with conflict. This does however give the Hilux a slightly menacing image, that might be a turn off for some buyers.

The Hilux has proved its toughness. It’s stood a war zone on its head, it can handle any civilian dishing out.
