Has the GT-R’s AWD system been left in the dust by other cars, or is it still impressive?
When it came to the R35 GT R's launch, its all wheel drive system was top of the class, giving unbelievable grip and cornering – crazy stuff. A key to the GT-R's giant killing performance was the ATTESA E-TS system, which can send up to 50% of the power to the front wheels. But since its debut, many other manufacturers have designed their own, high tech AWD systems. Others claim that the GT-R's system is still one of the best, offering a very different driving experience to its rivals. But some argue that newer AWD systems, particularly in high performance EVs, have settled the question in those arenas, too. But this debate also tends to include the larger question of whether the mechanical approach to performance that the GT R has taken is even relevant in an increasingly electronic, software driven automotive landscape.
The AWD on the GT-R is still fantastic. It may not have the fancy torque vectoring of newer systems, but it just gets the job done. It’s mind blowing still the way it puts power down.
It’s good, but it’s not mind blowing. It has been caught up and in some ways surpassed by cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo. Now the GT-R's system feels a bit old school.
It's so mechanical, I think it's still impressive. The new electric AWD systems might be more advanced on paper, but they don't give you that connected feeling like the GT R.
It's a double-edged sword. The performance is great with the AWD, but the GT-R is heavy because of it. It would be great to see what Nissan could do with it if they modernized it a bit.
The GT-R's AWD is still pure driving feel. Still, some of the new electric performance cars have it beat for outright capability. Whatever you want, it just depends.
It's still impressive, I'd say, because it's been relevant for so long. It’s saying something that we're even comparing a 15 year old system to brand new tech.
It's not the best anymore, but it's still unique. There is no other place you can get that experience of how the GT R's AWD works with the transmission to launch the car.
