Does the Murano's fuel efficiency make it a good choice over a hybrid SUV?

With fuel prices ever changing and environmental concerns growing, buyers are talking more about the efficiency of SUVs. The V6 Nissan Murano occupies an interesting position. The power is more than many four-cylinder SUVs but less efficient than the growing number of hybrid options. Consequently, one wonders if its performance and driving experience compensate for its greater fuel consumption than its hybrid rivals. Given the Murano's relatively small increase in fuel economy, coupled with the real world performance of the Murano's V6 at nearly or above projected fuel economy levels, it behooves potential buyers to consider the savings of a true hybrid as well as the feeling and performance of the V6 over a typical hybrid powertrain. This question aims to determine if the Murano's combination of power and efficiency has any place in a market that is growing more and more hybrid, and what sort of drivers will still prefer its traditional powertrain.

I went from a RAV4 Hybrid to a Murano and I don't regret it. Of course it costs more to run the V6 with the current gas prices, but the smooth power delivery and quieter ride is worth it. You feel more premium in the Murano, and I'm not constantly thinking about how to achieve maximum efficiency.

The Murano's fuel efficiency is anything but impressive. In mixed driving, I average about 22 mpg, which is painful when I see my neighbor's Highlander Hybrid getting 35+. If you drive a lot, the fuel savings of a hybrid would really pile up.

I have owned both so it depends on how you drive. For highway cruising, the Murano is great and feels more powerful, but if you do mostly city driving you will save a ton on gas with a hybrid. The Murano is for people who want their driving experience first and foremost, and don't care about pure efficiency.

I did the math before purchasing my Murano, and for me, the hybrid savings didn’t offset the additional purchase price. The cost difference doesn't make up for the fuel savings I don't drive enough. And, having the V6 power for road trips and when merging onto highways is nice too.

The Murano's V6 SUV fuel efficiency is decent, but there's no escaping the existence of hybrid options. I love my Murano, but when I fill up I do think I should have gone hybrid. Each buyer has to weigh the trade off between performance and efficiency for themselves.

The Murano's simpler powertrain is an appealing thing to a mechanic. Hybrids are great, but they have more potential components that can fail. For some people, the extra fuel cost is worth the extra fuel cost, and the Murano's V6 is a proven engine.

I believe the Achilles' heel of the Murano is its fuel efficiency. It’s not terrible, but in 2025, it seems dated. To keep up with the competition, Nissan has to provide a hybrid version. Smooth, the V6 is, but with the fuel costs required to keep it fed, there are just too many more efficient alternatives now.
