Does the MG Comet's quirky design work in its favour or against it?

Question

MG Comet EV's distinctive boxy shape and compact dimensions have seen it stand out on Indian roads. While some have a deeming its unconventional styling as cute and charming—bucking conventional car designs in a way they’re not used to. Some think it is odd looking or even unattractive, wondering if a style so unique will be broadly marketable. The car has set tongues wagging about the way the automobile is trending in terms of design, the balance between form and the function of the car and the shift in cultural preferences for what is considered 'cool' or desirable. But there's also debate about whether the Comet's eye catching look will be a trendsetter, or viewed as a short lived novelty. The discussion attempts to answer how the Comet's design affects public perception and its market potential.

It is this quirky design that makes me feel better about driving a small, affordable EV. It's too cool to be just a 'real' car, it looks intentional.

As a designer I like what MG is doing here. They’re making their own norms, making their own identity. Whether you like it or not, you have to say that it is memorable.

It's ugly, plain and simple. MG should have followed a more conventional design. It looks like something that a child would draw.

I think it’s smart marketing, the design is polarizing. People notice it, love it or hate it. If the car delivers on performance, that attention could mean sales.

At first, I thought it was weird, but it’s grown on me. There's something nice about it, and the small size makes sense for what it's being used for. It also stands out in a sea of cars that look the same.

@sucheta-ku · Answer

It’s trying way too hard to be quirky. It's not something I'd like to be seen driving, it looks like a toy car. I wouldn't want to roll up to work in that thing.

I love how the Comet looks! Seeing something different on the road is refreshing. People come up to me every time I park it to ask about it. It’s a great conversation starter.
