Does the i20 N Line’s exhaust note live up to the hype?

The standard i20 gets a specially tuned exhaust system on the i20 N Line, which is supposed to make it sound sportier than the standard car. The N Line variant features which was heavily marketed by Hyundai as one of the key selling point. Opinions about what it actually sounds like are mixed, however. A few drivers actually find it sporty and fun, but others think it's artificially pumped up and not very exciting for a performance car. Very often this has been a topic of debate – namely, did the exhaust note really add something to the driving experience, or was it just a gimmick? We also discuss how the sound stacks up against other sporty hatchbacks in the segment and if it’s loud enough to be heard in day to day driving without being grating on long drives.

It’s decent for a stock exhaust, but don’t expect it to sound like a proper hot hatch. It’s a nice sporty touch without going over the top.

It’s honestly pretty underwhelming. If you really rev it out, you can barely hear it inside the cabin.

I love it! It's a subtle thing and adds character to the car. A great solution for those who want a little sports fun, without bothering the neighbors.

It's all fake. Just sound, artificial sound pumped through the speakers. It totally ruins the authenticity of the driving experience.

It's pretty good for a 1.0L engine. There's no VW GTI levels of exhaust note to be had, though.

It grows on you. It wasn't at first, but I like the little pops and burbles when I'm driving spiritedly now.

The NVH is the real problem, the exhaust note is fine. At higher RPMs, the engine itself is quite buzzy.
