Does the BYD e6’s taxi heritage make it more appealing or less appealing for private owners?
The BYD e6 has a rich history in being used as a taxi in many countries around the world, notably in Singapore where it has been a favourite of fleet operators. The design and engineering priorities for this taxi background have been durability, spaciousness and ease of maintenance. This heritage can be seen in two very different lights for private buyers. For some, that’s a good thing, which means that the vehicle is built to take a beating and should therefore be reliable and long lasting. Some may view it as a negative because the e6 is a utilitarian kind of no frills car that doesn't fit the bill of what they would consider a personal vehicle. It starts to raise some interesting questions about perception, status and what people really value in a car that they own as opposed to one that they might be a passenger in.
I really believe the taxi heritage is a huge asset. This means the e6 is built to deal with constant use and abuse. If it can survive as a taxi, it will handle anything a family throws at it.
No way, I don't want to feel like I'm driving a taxi each day. Cars should have some personality and style, they shouldn’t just be appliances.
It's a double-edged sword. It’s probably super reliable, but it doesn’t have that refinement that you’d want in a personal car. That really depends on whether you value the function of the thing or the form of the thing.
I’ve owned an ex fleet vehicle before and as such, the taxi background is a good thing. They keep these cars in great shape and make them last. It’s kind of like you’re getting a pre vetted vehicle.
I think people are thinking way too hard about this. Whether it’s a car from the past or a newer one, it’s still a good car. For the money, the e6 has a lot of space and range, whether or not it has taxi heritage.
The trust it actually makes me have about the taxi thing. It's like that; I'd rather go to a restaurant that locals like, rather than one that tourists like. If professionals can use it, I can use it too.
I can see why some might be turned off by the taxi association, but for me it’s a selling point. It's the same as buying a commercial grade appliance for your home; you know it is built to last.
