Does the BE 09's reported 450km range stand up in Indian driving conditions and infra-structure?
According to WLTP cycle, Mahindra BE 09 is said to be offering a range of up to 450km on a single charge. This figure is impressive, but there are debates as to how it will translate to real world Indian driving conditions. Heavy traffic, extreme temperatures and varied terrain can all have a huge effect on EV range. India’s charging infrastructure is also still developing, particularly in terms of long distance travel. While some say 450km is more than enough for daily use and the occasional road trip, others believe range anxiety will remain a very valid concern for potential buyers. The BE 09's range and how it stacks up to the competition is also discussed, as is whether it's enough to get people to switch to electric cars.
On paper, 450km sounds great, but come on – bumper to bumper traffic, AC blasting, we’ll be lucky to get 300km.
Daily use is plenty but I would be nervous taking it on a long road trip. We don't have our highway charging infrastructure yet.
I think it's a good start. The fact is, most people don’t drive 450km in a day. It’s less about planning our trips differently and more about changing our mindset.
It's nothing short of stellar, besides charge time. This would have to be practical, which means fast charging would need to be widely available.
For most users, that’s enough to combat range anxiety. Also, since battery tech will continue to improve, software updates will likely increase range too.
How often do you drive 450km without breaking for fuel or a break? Compare it to petrol cars. It is more than enough for most scenarios.
The real question is whether that range will be consistent. Will it drop as much as some other EVs we’ve seen in a few years?
