Did the 4 stroke Chetak lose the 'character' that made the original special?
The Bajaj Chetak transition from 2-stroke to 4-stroke engine was a big step from what the scooter used to convey. Many people felt that the original 2-stroke Chetak was part of its charm, with its distinctive sound, smell and riding feel. They were ingrained in to Indian culture and nostalgia. The 4 stroke version was more efficient, and better for the environment, but the riding experience was different. Debates were had about whether the new Chetak had retained the very soul of the original scooter or not, or whether it was now a completely different scooter altogether. It’s about progress versus tradition, about the role of sensory experiences in vehicle appreciation and about the emotional bonds people develop with their vehicles.
Absolutely. Another generic 4 stroke scooter. The 2-stroke had personality!
Character is overrated. Cleaner emissions and better fuel efficiency? I’ll take that any day.
It’s a different kind of character. It’s smoother and more refined than the 4 stroke. That's not a bad thing.
It lost the sound and smell, but gained in reliability. I'm willing to make that trade off.
The character of the original Chetak can't be replaced with anything. The 4 stroke is too modern for its own good.
The 4 stroke has its own charm i think. Vinyl and digital music are like apples to oranges.
The engine was never the real character of the Chetak, it was the design. The 4 stroke still looks classic.
We’re just being nostalgic, let’s be honest. Objectively the 4 stroke is better in almost every way.
