Compared to Japanese dual sports, how reliable is the KTM 690 Enduro?
For many riders, reliability of a motorcycle is a key factor, whether they intend to make a long trip or simply use their bike as their means of daily transportation. In KTM, they have a reputation for making highly performant machines, but not so many people trust their long-term reliability like the ones from the Japanese manufacturers such as Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and so on. Specifically, there has been talk of the 690 Enduro's reliability. Are the worries about its reliability well-founded, or is the notion of Japanese dual sports being more bulletproof accurate? So let's take a look at real-world use cases and what type of maintenance is required.

I've owned both, and I'd say that the 690 is 80% as reliable as a Japanese dual sport. That last 20% really drives a huge boost in performance and capability. I’m willing to make that trade-off.

The reliability issues are exaggerated by people. It does need more maintenance than a Japanese bike, but it’s not like it’s constantly breaking down. As long as you follow the service schedule, you’ll be fine. It does require an extra bit of work, but the performance makes up for it.

It’s closing, but it’s still there. They've improved a lot there, but they're not at Japanese levels. But the 690 is one of their more reliable models. And just budget for more frequent maintenance.

I have had both, and my DR650 was bulletproof but boring. The 690 is a lot more fun to ride, but it needs more attention. The trade-off is worth it, and it’s reliable enough for me.

It’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The newer ones (2014+) are much better; the early models had some issues. Not Honda reliable, but very dependable if well taken care of.

Japanese bikes are more reliable, let’s be real. If you know me, my buddy has over 100K miles on his XR650L with minimal issues. And if you're going to be wrenching on it more often, the 690 is a great bike.

I have 30,000 miles on my 690, and it's been rock solid. Just maintain it, and it will treat you right. It's sure to need a little more attention than a DR650, but the performance difference is worth it.
