Can the Tata Avinya's 'born electric' platform edge out converted ICE vehicles?

Ashutosh on 26 December 2024 12:23
The Tata Avinya is being developed on a dedicated electric vehicle platform (known as a 'born electric' or 'ground up EV' design). Unlike many current EVs based on existing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle platforms, this approach is different. The packaging, weight distribution and general vehicle design can be addressed through a dedicated EV platform. But it also comes with a need for substantial investment and is riskier than adapting existing architectures. The debate is about whether the benefits of a ground up EV design will translate into meaningful advantage for the consumer. Some say it will feature more innovative features, better space utilization and improved performance. Some say that the differences are so insignificant in real world use that modern adapted platforms are engineered so well. The cost of building a new platform and whether it will let Tata future proof the Avinya for next gen technologies are also discussed.

Absolutely. The future is born electric platforms. More interior space, better packaging and optimized performance.

It's overrated. The modern adapted platforms are so good that most people won't care.

It will also future proof. The EV platform will be easier to update and improve over time as it is dedicated.

It's a big risk for Tata. Creating a new platform is costly and time consuming. In fact, they might have been better off to adapt an existing one.

This will open up more creative body styles and interior layouts as it is born electric. That could be a big selling point.

It depends on execution. Even a well designed adapted platform could be better than a mediocre ground up EV platform.

The biggest advantage may be in brand perception. It sounds more advanced and appealing to tech savvy buyers if it is 'born electric'.

But I’m more interested in the battery tech and the charging capabilities. If those aren’t competitive, the platform type doesn’t matter as much.
