Can the Maruti NEXA Jimny EV really be an off-roader, or is it just another city SUV in disguise?

In its petrol avatar, the Jimny has a legendary reputation of being a capable off roader. With the shift to electric, however, there is worry that it will not perform as well in rough terrain. Batteries add weight, there's the potential for range anxiety in remote areas, and it doesn't have a traditional 4x4 system, so there are a lot of questions about its off road credentials. To counter that though, electric motors provide instant torque, which could be a useful factor in rock crawling. The silent operation would also add to the wilderness experience. The downsides, however, are the lack of a manual transmission and the fact that an EV is a pain in the patootie to repair in the middle of nowhere. Can the Jimny EV live up to its predecessor’s legacy, or will it become another urban runabout with a tough appearance?

But still, it’s a Jimny at heart! With electric motor instant torque it'll be a beast on steep inclines. And you won’t have to worry about stalling in tricky situations anymore.

Are you kidding? An EV for off-roading? How do you find juice when you're in the middle of nowhere? With petrol, at least you can carry a jerry can.

I think it will be even better off road. Rock crawling is great because electric motors have precise control. Exploring nature in silence, can you imagine?

Most Jimny owners never take them off road anyway, so let’s be real. The EV version, at least, will be more practical to use daily and better for the environment.

The batteries might actually add weight which helps with traction. And with some clever engineering, they could throw the weight around better than the petrol version.

Without a manual transmission there is no true off roading. Half the fun is the clutch and the gears in tough terrain. It’s just a poser’s car now.

You all are missing the point. The Jimny EV could bring off roading to an entirely new audience who were put off by regular 4x4s. It's progress!
