Can Aprilia’s GPR 250 be as reliable as Japanese rivals?
For many motorcycle buyers, reliability is a big deal, particularly in the smaller displacement categories where bikes are used for daily commuting or are a first bike for new riders. Aprilia GPR 250 enters the market of well known Japanese manufacturers who are known for their bulletproof reliability. Aprilia has a good reputation in racing and high performance bikes, but some potential buyers are a little worried about the durability and cost of maintenance for the GPR 250 over the long term compared to Japanese bikes. Some motorcycle enthusiasts get caught up in an endless discussion to this question; others believe Italian engineering have come a long way, while the other half remains skeptical to pick a European brand over the tested best Japanese in this category.
No way. The 250cc class is decades of refinement on the part of Japanese bikes. This is still new to Aprilia.
We don’t have long term data yet, so it’s not fair to judge. Who knows, the GPR 250 might actually surprise us all and be reliable.
Reliability isn’t just about the bike not breaking down. It’s also about parts availability and service network. There's some catching up for Aprilia to do there.
The playing field has been leveled by modern manufacturing techniques. These days I'd trust a new Aprilia just as much as a Japanese bike.
For the first couple of years it will probably be fine, but long term ownership is probably where the differences will show up.
But who cares about reliability when you’re riding something with this much character? Live a little!
I think it should be reliable enough for most riders. The real question is whether the extra maintenance costs are worth the Aprilia badge.
