Are the BYD Seal’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on par with competitors?
On the BYD Seal, there are a number of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking. But these systems have been hit and miss when it comes to performance and reliability compared to more established competitors such as Tesla, Mercedes, or Volvo. The Seal's ADAS gets some love for being smooth and getting frequent over the air updates, but there complaints of overly sensitive alerts or unreliable performance. As a result, debates have arisen about whether newer EV manufacturers such as BYD can match traditional automakers and tech focused companies in developing and refining complex ADAS features. It often includes conversation about software development, sensor quality and the role of ADAS in the whole EV package.
On highways the lane keeping on my Seal works great, but on poorly marked roads it struggles. At the price, it’s impressive though.
BYD’s ADAS is ok, but it’s no Autopilot. But Tesla is still years ahead in this department.
They were way too sensitive so I had to turn off most of the alerts. They'll hopefully improve it with updates.
It’s not bad for a first attempt. A couple of years down the line, I bet BYD will be right up there with the best.
It’s smooth adaptive cruise control, but the lane centering gets away with me. Although, it's good enough for me.
I’ve driven a Tesla and the Seal and honestly, for everyday use, I cannot tell much difference in the ADAS performance.
Frequent OTA updates are a good thing. In the three months I've had it, my Seal's ADAS has been noticeably better.
