Are the BYD e6’s lack of features a dealbreaker or an advantage in disguise?
The lack of a lot of the features of other electric vehicles in its price range has been criticized for the BYD e6. There are some of the tech and luxury features you come to expect in modern cars that are absent, like some fancy infotainment setups or even a premium sound system. Also absent, are all the advanced driver assistance systems now becoming the norm. But this simplicity could also be regarded as an advantage in regard to reliability and user friendliness. This would be great for those who want fewer things that can go wrong, which ultimately will offer fewer complex systems and a more solid product – perhaps ideal for those who are looking for long term durability as opposed to leading edge features. That sparks a discussion of what really matters in a car: Is it better to have every possible gadget? Or is there value in a more stripped down, focused approach?
In fact, I love that the e6 is a simple car, as I’ve owned overly complicated cars before. The fewer things you have to break, the fewer headaches you have down the road.
At that price point, no way should you be getting way more features. Other EVs are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, and it feels like BYD is stuck in the past.
It depends, I think, on what you use the car for. Do you really need all those fancy features, if it’s just a daily commuter or family hauler? The basics are covered well by the e6.
Of course, the lack of features is a definite deal breaker for me. I don't want my car to be a decade old and disconnected, I want it to be modern and connected.
You guys are not getting it. The e6 is not a tech showcase, but a workhorse. The reason it’s so reliable and easy to maintain is its simplicity.
I actually enjoy it. These days, so many cars attempt to become smartphones on wheels. All the e6 wants to do is be a good, solid car.
It's a tough call. You get a huge battery and a ton of space on one hand. While you’re not getting the standard features of much cheaper cars. Well, it’s really a matter of priorities.
