Are people really right about the KTM 990 Supermoto R's maintenance being that bad?

Question

The KTM 990 Supermoto R is known to be a high-maintenance machine, with some riders saying their machine spends more time in the garage than on the road. This, of course, has been a long-running topic of debate over whether the bike’s performance and character warrant the headaches associated with said maintenance. Others say the 990 SMR can be as reliable as any other bike if it's looked after properly and preventative maintenance is carried out. Some have horror stories of them breaking down frequently and costing a lot to repair. There is also discussion of the availability of parts and the cost of servicing compared to more common motorcycles. This question asks the real-world experiences of 990 SMR owners to see if the maintenance reputation is deserved or overblown and what a potential owner should expect in upkeep and reliability of their car.

It's all relative. I think the 990 SMR feels pretty low maintenance coming from vintage bikes. It’s all just about perspective and what you are used to.

@rahul-kanj · Answer

The maintenance aspect actually is enjoyable to me. It's a great opportunity to know your bike. But if you’re not into that, then yeah, it’s not the bike for you.

@abhijeet-r · Answer

It isn’t too bad to maintain, but parts can be eye-watering. Compared to more common bikes, it really hits you there.

@sourabh-ja · Answer

It's been a money pit for me. However, it has become fun to ride, but the constant problems have made it sour. The maintenance headaches are why I’m thinking of selling mine.

@sakshi-gup · Answer

I believe that is the reputation you get from not doing basic maintenance. If you take care of oil changes and valve checks, it's no worse than any other performance bike.

@amar-jain · Answer

It's not that bad maintenance-wise, but finding a good mechanic who knows these bikes is a challenge. In my experience, that’s the real headache.

@shobhit-gu · Answer

It's a pain, no doubt. I love riding it, but I’m always scared that the next thing is going to break. Definitely not a bike for the person who just wants to ride and forget.

@vikas-lakh · Answer

I've had mine for years with no big problems. The secret is to stick to the service schedule and not skimp on parts. If you do that to it, it will treat you right.

@priyanka-k · Answer

For sure, it's more maintenance intensive than some bikes, but that's part of the deal with owning a bike. It can really be rewarding to work on it yourself.

@mansi-upad · Answer

People make it out to be worse than it is. Yes, it demands more care than a Japanese bike, but if you keep on top of maintenance, it's a pretty solid bike.
