Against the Japanese, can the KTM RC 490 really compete?
The middleweight sport bike segment is a very competitive one. Japanese manufacturers such as Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki have been ruling the segment for many years now. The entry of KTM with the RC 490 prompts the questions as to how it will match performance, build quality, and value for money. A European alternative that could bring some unique characteristics to the table is something some riders are excited about, while others are skeptical about how KTM can match the Japanese bikes for reliability and refinement. Much of the discussion centers on whether KTM’s more aggressive styling and possibly sharper handling can compensate for any shortcomings elsewhere. They're also curious about how the RC 490's electronics package and rider aids will stack up against those already on offer from established players in the market.
Better handling and more advanced electronics will help KTM crush it.
There is no way it will match Japanese reliability. For my money, I’ll stick with my tried and true R6.
While it probably has an edge in power-to-weight ratio, the servicing costs will surely be higher.
In a segment that hasn't seen much innovation recently, the RC 490 could be a breath of fresh air.
And Japanese bikes will still win on price and dealer network, which is important for lots of riders.
And if it's KTM's typical aggressive ergonomics, then it might be more track-focused than the Japanese competitors.
Long-term reliability will be the real test. That's something KTM needs to prove itself in.
There's no way it won't have a killer quickshifter and TFT display that'll make the Japanese options look positively ancient.
