Do the Kia Syros' sliding rear seats actually make sense, or are they just a gimmick?

They're definitely useful. Having kids, the ability to adjust the space between car seats and cargo is a huge plus. It's sort of the mini-van feature in a compact car.

Seems like a gimmick to me. How often will you actually be adjusting those seats? And it's just one more thing that can break down the line.

It’s genuinely innovative for this segment, I think. It gives that extra flexibility that you normally only get in much bigger cars. It’s a game changer for small families or folks who occasionally need to carry around larger items.

It’s useful, but I wonder about long term durability. With time, sliding mechanisms can wear out. I’d like to see how they hold up after a few years of use.

It seems to me that it would be really handy for road trips. For long drives, adjust for more leg room, and then slide forward for more luggage space when you arrive. It's not revolutionary, but I like it.

It's solving a problem that doesn't really exist. People set their seat and forget about it. I prefer to have more total space than adjustable space.

For someone tall with a small kid, it’s amazing. And I can have my seat all the way back and still have the kid comfortable behind me. These small things can make a big difference in the daily use.
Does the Kia Sonet’s backseat really suck as much as people make it out to be?

I've had my Sonet for a year now and to be honest the backseat is fine for two adults. Sure, it’s not limo like, but what are you going to get in a sub 4m SUV? My parents are just average height and they've never complained on our weekend trips.
Does the Kia Sonet’s backseat really suck as much as people make it out to be?

At 6'2", I can tell you the Sonet's rear seat is a no go for me. My knees felt like they were in my chest. Shorter people might be okay with it, but for anyone above 5'10" it's going to be tough on longer trips.

I think people are being a bit harsh on the Sonet. The back's a little snug but Kia has done a good job of the seat cushioning and backrest angle. But it’s way more comfortable than some other cars in this segment.

To be honest, if you're looking for back seat space, you should not even be considering sub 4m SUVs. For a small family, the Sonet makes the most of its dimensions, and it’s more than adequate.

I have the 2024 facelift model, and I honestly swear they've made the rear seat more comfortable. The knee room is definitely helped by the scooped out front seatbacks. It's not huge, but it does feel noticeably better than the older version I test drove.

I’ve been in the back of many Sonets as a frequent Uber user. For short trips it’s fine, but anything over an hour and you can feel the lack of space. For adults, the middle seat is useless.

It all depends on how you expect things to be. The Sonet is spacious, coming out of a hatchback. If you're coming down from a bigger SUV, however, you might find it cramped. It's all relative.

I'm all for it! Reminds me of road trips with my grandpa’s old Chevy. And it’s great for those quick naps at charging stations.

Nah, it's a gimmick. There's a reason modern cars have bucket seats, better support and safety. It’s a step backwards.

I can see the appeal as a parent. A place to change diapers on the go and easy access to the back seat? Sign me up!

The idea is interesting, but I worry about safety. In a crash, what happens to that middle passenger? Are there even seatbelts?

I think it’s great for making the most of space in a compact EV. It’s thinking outside the box… or inside the box, as it were!

Nice idea, but I imagine it'll only be a hit in some markets. It won't catch on in places with stricter safety regulations.
