Are the reliability worries about the Interceptor 650 overblown?
10 January 2025 12:29
Because I work on bikes, I think the Interceptor is actually one of the more reliable options in its class. And it’s simple, overbuilt in many ways, and easy to work on. The vast majority of issues I see are because of lack of proper maintenance, not some inherent flaw in the bike.
How versatile is the Interceptor 650 compared to retro styled bikes?

The Interceptor is a dream for customizers! Aftermarket support is through the roof, especially for cosmetic mods. I’ve seen bobbers, scramblers, everything built on this platform. It’s also easy to work on because of the simple design. It’s like a blank canvas that is ready for how you would like to decorate it.

There are lots of parts but the Interceptor seems somewhat limited compared to something like a Triumph Bonneville. Some more radical changes are restricted by frame geometry, and performance mods don’t appear to provide as much benefit. While it is good for light customization, it is not good for full blown overhauls.

I believe the Interceptor is beautiful in subtle customization. Small changes that make the bike a bit more of what it is, but without completely changing it. A different seat, some brushed aluminum bits, maybe a different exhaust. You go too far and you lose what makes that special in the first place.

I would say its very customizable though, but you have to be creative if you’ve heavily modified your Interceptor like I have. They are heavy stock parts, so there's a lot of weight reduction potential. The frame restricts some of what you can do, but it also forces you to think outside the box for different builds.

The issue with customizing the Interceptor is that you spend more than the bike is worth pretty quickly. You can change a lot, but at some point you have to ask: Why not buy a different bike? It's great for mild personalization, but if you want to do real custom work, there's better platforms.
Do people really mean what they say about the Interceptor 650 being beginner friendly?

I began on an Interceptor and it’s a good bike to start on. It's stable at low speeds, there is good visibility, and it's smooth and predictable power. On top of that, you aren't going to get in trouble too quickly. At first, it was intimidating, but you get used to the weight really quickly.

For a first bike, I wouldn't recommend the Interceptor as a first bike, as someone who teaches new riders. As you can see, it’s too heavy for many beginners to feel confident with, particularly when moving slowly or picking up. What's more, some models lack ABS. For learning, there are better, lighter options out there.

I believe it depends on the beginner. If you're a bigger person, or you've had some experience with heavy machinery, the Interceptor might be okay. It’s a lot of bike, but for smaller riders or for those with no motorized experience at all, it might be too much. In my opinion it's more of an intermediate-beginner bike.

Power delivery, ergonomics and feel are all beginner friendly but not so much the technology. Bikes today, such as those with riding modes and higher end ABS, can be more forgiving in regards to beginner mistakes. Now that’s not to say that learning on a simpler bike won’t make you a better rider in the long run.

I started on a smaller bike and went to the Interceptor, and I’m glad I did it that way. I think you can start on the Interceptor, but having some experience before playing with one of the heavier bikes made it more fun. For a beginner looking to upgrade, it’s a great second bike.
Will the Hunter 450 get modern amenities like ride by wire and riding modes?

I hope they keep it simple. What I like about the Hunter is its back to basics charm. That could be ruined by adding too much tech.

To compete they'll have to add some modern features. I’m betting we’ll also see ride by wire and at least 2-3 riding modes.

I hope not, maybe on a top spec variant, but I doubt the base model will be full of fancy electronics. RE knows their audience.

But they could surprise us with a TFT display and Bluetooth connectivity. It seems that is the trend these days.
Will the Hunter 450 cannibalize sales of the 350 model?
10 January 2025 12:20
I do not think it will cannibalize sales much. Newer riders and those on a budget will still reach for the 350. For more experienced riders looking for a bit more oomph, the 450 will probably be their preferred ride.

In fact, it could drive up total Hunter sales. Two engine options give buyers more choice and allow the Hunter to remain competitive with rival brands offering several engine sizes.
Will the Hunter 450 cannibalize sales of the 350 model?

I'm afraid it will cannibalize sales. Many people will probably just stretch their budget for the 450 vs the 350, since the price difference probably won’t be huge.

No, they'll be appealing to different crowds. City riding 350 and highway runs 450. Good move by RE to cover more bases.
