Is the new Maruti Swift Sport available with AMT?

The Swift is currently available without an AMT while the next generation is expected to carry a traditional automatic gearbox as an option as stock. The Dzire uses an AMT in the diesel engine and the same can even be introduced at any stage of the car's remaining life cycle. The introduction of Suzuki Baleno has highly effected the sales of Swift as well as Dzire as both the cars are lesser equipped and practically low in power than the premium hatchback. All of them are powered by the same 1.2 L petrol and 1.3 L diesel engines while the difference in weight makes all the difference.

The automatic transmission for Maruti Vitara Brezza is not under consideration at this time. Maruti Suzuki currently has AMT paired to its 1.3 L, 75 HP diesel engine whereas pairing it to the same engine under 90 HP tag is yet to be done. The Brezza comes with DDiS 200 variant of the same engine which produces a max of 200 Nm of torque while the considerable difference is not felt because the weight of the car is quite high when compared to the cars with the lower powered engine. The price of the car starts at INR 6.99 lakh.

The Swift Dezire tour is a sedan, which was launched by Maruti in 2012 to cater to the taxi market. The car has been, since, discontinued and is out of production. You cannot get a new Dzire tour, but, hey, you can look for second hand ones. It is powered by a 1248cc, CRDi engine which produces 75 BHP @ 4000 RPM and a maximum torque of 190 NM @ 2000 RPM. It is mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

The exact launch date of the Swift Diesel AMT isn't out yet, but we expect it to launch pretty soon. There's a very high likelihood that the car will launch before the end of this year. It will be equipped with a 1248 cc engine churns out 74 Bhp @ 4000 rpm and 190 Nm @ 2000 rpm which will be mated to a 5-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission).

This makes it easy for Suzuki to anytime launch the diesel AMT in the new Swift. It would raise the cost of the car with the same margin as in the compact sedan version.

Unfortunately, Maruti Swift diesel is not available with an automatic gearbox in India. The automatic is offered on the Dzire petrol and diesel variant. The gearbox used on them is a Magneti Marelli sourced 5-speed AMT unit while the conventional CVT gearbox is used on the petrol variants of Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The car maker has offered the Swift in India with just a 5-speed gearbox from it's starting days. They can offer it anytime in the country as all of the technology and setup would stay the same as the Dzire for the Swift also.
