That depends on what you want. If you want the latest tech and the most performance, a newer bike is what you want. If you don’t mind a little electronic interference, the SMT is still awesome.

I honestly think it has been surpassed in most ways. Advanced electronics make modern bikes faster, more efficient, and safer. That doesn't mean the SMT isn't still a blast to ride.

The 990 SMT’s a classic for a reason. It’s no wonder it doesn’t have all the latest gadgets, but it’s got soul. I love one over many newer bikes.

It's competitive in some ways and behind in others. This is a big drawback for some riders on account of the lack of modern safety features such as traction control and cornering ABS.

I think the SMT hits a sweet spot that many modern bikes seem to miss. It is powerful, without being overwhelming or overly complex. Sometimes simpler is better.

On paper it’s been surpassed, but not necessarily in terms of real-world enjoyment. The SMT provides a raw, connected riding experience that many riders still prefer over modern alternatives that are more sanitized.

Absolutely! I’ve had my 990 SMT for years, and it’s done everything I’ve asked of it. Weekend twisties, some light trail riding, and of course, commuting. It’s the Swiss Army knife of motorcycles.

Not quite perfect, but close. Not for everyone, though; with no traction control or cornering ABS, some riders do not like it. Still an awesome bike, though!

It's one of the best all-rounders, I'd say, but the ultimate is a stretch. Much the same kind of versatility is offered by bikes like the Multistrada or S1000XR, albeit with more modern features.

For its time, definitely. However, the 990 SMT is now a long time ago in motorcycle terms. By today's standards, I'd argue something like the current KTM 890 Adventure R is a more capable all-rounder.

That depends on your definition of "do it all." The SMT is hard to beat if you are looking to have a bike that covers sporty riding and light touring. If you want serious off-road capability or long-distance comfort, there are better options.

For good reason, the 990 SMT is a cult classic. By today’s standards, it’s not perfect, but its combination of power, handling, and versatility is still impressive. It's pretty damn close to the ultimate do-it-all bike.

My SMT is great, but there are some areas where it's not great at. It's not a great touring range, and it's too heavy to take serious off-roading. But it’s not the ultimate all-rounder; it’s an awesome bike.

Yeah, it's more work compared to a Japanese bike. That’s part of the charm for some of us, though. You will, however, have to be prepared for some specialized tools and a good service manual.

It's not a nightmare by any means, but it's not for everyone. If you don’t feel comfortable performing more advanced maintenance, then you may be better off leaving it to a professional.

That depends on how skilled you are and how patient. Valve adjustments can be tricky some jobs. It's no harder than any other bike, but routine stuff like oil changes and chain maintenance.

I’ve enjoyed keeping my 990 SMT. It’s more time and effort than some bikes, but you really get to know your machine inside and out.
