Hyundai has ended the production of its entry-level hatchback Santro in India due to low demand. Although the petrol variants are discontinued, the CNG variants will continue to be sold. This decision is part of Hyundais strategy to consolidate resources and minimize supply chain constraints. I believe this move reflects the shifting consumer preferences towards SUVs and compact SUVs in the Indian market.

Hyundai has introduced new CNG variants for the Santro, replacing the old Magna CNG and Sportz CNG with the Magna Executive and Sportz Executive. These new variants come with fewer features compared to their non-executive counterparts but are priced lower. The CNG variants are powered by a 1.1L petrol engine producing 60PS and 85Nm of torque when running on CNG. I think this is a smart move to keep the Santro competitive in the CNG segment.

The Hyundai Santro CNG variants have been repositioned to compete more effectively in the entry-level hatchback segment. The new Magna Executive and Sportz Executive CNG variants are priced starting at Rs. 5.87 lakh, making them more accessible to budget-conscious buyers. I believe these new variants will help Hyundai maintain a presence in the CNG market despite the overall decline in Santro sales.

Hyundais 2018 Santro launch saw significant interest, with over 38,500 bookings and 211,000 enquiries within a short period. However, the cars sales did not meet expectations, leading to a reevaluation of its market position. The Santro CNG variants, with their factory-fitted CNG kits, were a key selling point, but the overall sales figures were not enough to sustain production. I think the initial hype around the Santros relaunch was promising, but it ultimately didnt translate into long-term sales success.

The 2018 Hyundai Santro was launched with new design cues and features like a touchscreen infotainment system and rear AC vents. The CNG variants were particularly notable for their factory-fitted CNG kits, which appealed to buyers looking for a more fuel-efficient option. Despite these updates, the base variants lacked basic features like factory-fitted AC, which might have impacted sales. I believe that while the updates were welcome, they may not have been enough to keep the Santro competitive in a rapidly changing market.
