BMW XM Hybrid
About
The BMW XM Hybrid is the flagship SUV from BMW, combining the best of the X line with the performance ethos of the M division. Powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and a 197hp electric motor, it produces 653hp and 800Nm of torque, making it the most powerful BMW on sale today. This plug-in hybrid SUV features an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, allowing it to accelerate from 0-100kmph in just 4.3 seconds. The XMs design is bold and divisive, with a unique geometric patterned roof liner instead of a sunroof. The interior is luxurious, with features like four-zone climate control, massage functions for the front seats, and ample legroom in the rear. Despite its weight and size, the XM handles remarkably well, thanks to its stiff suspension setup, though this compromises ride comfort. Overall, the XM is a blend of luxury, performance, and electrification, making it a unique offering in the Indian market.

Our take on this /// Verdict
The BMW XM Hybrid is a complex and intriguing vehicle that blends luxury, performance, and electrification, but it doesnt quite fit neatly into any one category. On one hand, it boasts the most powerful configuration from BMWs M division, with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and a 197hp electric motor, producing a combined 653hp and 800Nm of torque. This setup delivers impressive acceleration, with a 0-100kmph time of just 4.3 seconds. However, the transition between electric and petrol power can be jerky, and the 8-speed automatic transmission shows some quirks. The XMs handling is exceptional, thanks to its stiff suspension setup, but this comes at the cost of ride comfort. The design is bold and polarizing, and the interior, while luxurious, lacks some expected features like a sunroof. Overall, the XM is fun to drive and turns heads, but its mixed identity might confuse some buyers.
Price
The BMW XM Hybrid is priced at Rs. 2.6 crore ex-showroom in India, making it a premium and exclusive offering. When you factor in the various taxes and registration fees, the on-road price can easily exceed Rs. 3 crore, depending on the state and local regulations. This pricing positions the XM as a niche product, targeting a very specific segment of buyers who are looking for a unique blend of performance, luxury, and hybrid technology. While the price is steep, it reflects the vehicles high-end features, advanced technology, and the exclusivity that comes with being part of the M division. For those who can afford it, the XM offers a distinctive driving experience and unparalleled status symbol.
Latest Updates
Sunday, 10 November 2024 02:11 PM
For the 2025 model year, the BMW XM will see minor updates, including the addition of Highway Assistant as a standard feature. This technology allows for hands-free driving up to 85 mph on highways and includes an eye-activated lane change feature. Despite these updates, the XM remains a polarizing vehicle due to its design and performance characteristics. I think the addition of advanced driving features is a step in the right direction, but the XM still needs to refine its overall driving experience.

The 2024 BMW XM Label Red model has been introduced, boasting a 738-horsepower variant of the XMs plug-in-hybrid powertrain. This makes it the most powerful BMW M model ever produced. The Label Red can launch from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and features a 25.7-kWh battery pack for up to 30 miles of electric-only range. I believe this powerful variant is an impressive engineering feat, but its high price and limited electric range might be deterrents for some buyers.

BMW has announced that it will end production of the XM plug-in hybrid SUV by 2028, with no plans for a successor or a full electric version. This decision comes after the vehicle failed to gain significant market traction, with only 2,315 units sold in North America in 2023. The powertrain, however, will be used in other future BMW models. I believe this move indicates a shift in BMWs strategy towards more popular and efficient models.

The 2024 BMW XM continues to blend luxury and performance, featuring a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine combined with a plug-in hybrid system. The base model produces 644 horsepower, while the XM Label Red ups this to 738 horsepower. Despite its impressive specs, the XMs massive weight and sometimes stiff ride are notable drawbacks. I believe the XMs balance of power and luxury is appealing, but its handling and efficiency could be improved.

The BMW XM Label Red recently set a new record for hybrid electric SUVs at Pikes Peak, highlighting its performance capabilities. With 738 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, it demonstrated its prowess on the challenging course. This achievement underscores the XMs potential as a high-performance vehicle. I think this record shows that the XM can deliver on its promises of power and performance, even if it doesnt excel in everyday driving.
Mileage
Monday, 18 November 2024 06:30 PM
The BMW XM Hybrid offers an interesting mix of fuel efficiency and performance, thanks to its plug-in hybrid setup. On the WLTP cycle, it achieves an impressive 61.9kpl, though this figure is unlikely to be replicated in real-world Indian driving conditions. The 25.7kWh lithium-ion battery provides an electric-only range of up to 88km, making it suitable for daily city commutes without using the petrol engine. Charging the battery takes around 4.25 hours with a 7.4kW charger. While the actual mileage will vary based on driving habits and conditions, the XMs hybrid system ensures it is more fuel-efficient than traditional super SUVs, especially for those who can utilize the electric mode frequently.
