Should Tata Ace drivers be given a special license category?
In India, the Tata Ace stands in a class of its own. It's bigger and stronger than a standard three wheeled auto but smaller and more nimble than a regular sized truck. And because of this in-between status, there has been debate over how these vehicles should be regulated. Ace drivers usually operate with the current standard light commercial vehicle license. Nevertheless, the vehicle is so common and the particular difficulties of driving it (notably, its propensity to become unstable when overloaded) that some advocate for a special license category. Additional training on, for example, load management, city driving and safety procedures, could be involved. But opponents say the move would create unnecessary bureaucracy and could limit drivers' job opportunities. Road safety, driver education, and the regulation of an informal sector where many people make a living are part of the debate.
Absolutely. Driving the Ace isn't like driving other vehicles and requires a special skill to do safely. Drivers could be properly trained, and in fact, it may even professionalize the industry, if they got a special license.
