Overview
After a mid-cycle facelift, Maruti Suzuki has re-launched their entry level premium sedan, SX4. With rising competition in its segment, it was necessary for the company to bring some new changes to this car to make it a strong contender in its segment. Let’s find out the new changes.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 Exterior
Maruti SX4 has always been a muscular sedan which clearly targets male buyers. The car simply looks aggressive and sporty from every angle and shows no sign of elegance. The new changes can be seen at its front which includes redesigned front bumper and grille. The multi-layered front grille comes with chrome garnishing which adds premium touch to this car and gives it a smoky face. The restyled front bumper features noticeable lines on it which makes it look aerodynamic. The bumper also houses a black colored air dam with circular fog lights on both sides. The swept back headlights look sporty at its front and gels well with the up-raised bonnet. Move to the side of this car and the muscular look continues with its bulgy wheel arches and stylish 16 inches alloy wheels. The side body panels remains unchanged but you will notice new outside mirrors integrated with clear lens side indicators. The tall positioned boot of SX4 adds visual bulk to this car and gives it an attractive look. The lip spoiler on its trunk looks premium with chrome bar placed just above its number plate. The multi faced tail light cluster also enhances the beauty of this car.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 Interior
Maruti SX4 uses dual tone interiors which look premium and classy. Company has used top quality of fabrics and upholstery in the new version. The new SX4 features chrome finished door handles, wooden finishing on arm rests and new fabric insertion on door trims. The car offers good amount of headroom and shoulder room at its front. The front seats are very comfortable and give proper under thigh support. The car offers less knee and shoulder room at the back.
Comfort and Convenience
The top variant of SX4 is stuffed with lot of features to give you optimum level of comfort. It has automatic climate control, adjustable power steering, power windows, electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs, center arm rest at the back, MID, keyless entry and driver seat height adjuster.
Dashboard and Storage
The new dashboard of Maruti SX4 comes in black and beige color which gives it a fresh look inside. The quality of plastic buttons being placed on the central console of this dashboard could have been better though. The newly chrome surrounded circular AC vents of SX4 looks premium inside. There is a spacious glove box in this dashboard which can carry your essentials. The gear console comes with two cup holders while there are door pockets in its front doors. The rear centre arm rest also comes with cup holders. Apart from these, SX4 has a boot capacity of 505 litres.
Music System of Maruti Suzuki SX4
The central console of SX4 comes with a new integrated touch screen audio system with navigation system. It’s a radio/CD/MP3 player with four speakers and two tweeters. The new system also has USB + Aux-in for direct connectivity of musical gadgets. Bluetooth connectivity is an additional feature which enables you to take/make calls while driving. All audio and Bluetooth controls are mounted on its steering wheel with illumination.
Engine and Gearbox
SX4 runs on three different fuels which are petrol, CNG and diesel. It is powered by a 1.6L four-cylinder VVT petrol engine which churns out a maximum power of 103 bhp at 5600 rpm. The torque output of this 16valves, DOHC engine is of 145 Nm which arrives at 4100 rpm. This same engine is also used in its CNG variant which produces a peak power of 86 bhp at 5600 rpm with a torque output of 122 Nm arriving at 4000 rpm. The diesel engine is a Fiat sourced 1.3L four cylinder DOHC engine which generates a maximum power output of 89 bhp at 4000 rpm with utmost torque production of 200 Nm arriving at 1750 rpm. All three engines are mated with five-speed manual gearbox.
Acceleration and Performance
The petrol unit is the most refined and powerful of all three engines. It takes around 12.5 seconds to reach 0-100 km/hr and can reach the top speed of 180 km/hr. The short gear ratios help this car to be on the faster side. The CNG variant is two seconds slower than the petrol unit and manages to record a top speed of 170 km/hr. The diesel version of SX4 feels underpowered as this engine feels unable to take the heavy weight of this car. It suffocates at high rpms and you will have to keep shifting its gears to keep its engine boiling. There is major turbo lag below 2000 rpm and the car takes round 14.5 seconds to reach 0-100 km/hr.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 Mileage
The petrol unit gives a mileage of around 12 km/ltr while it’s CNG and diesel variants give a mileage of around 15 km/ltr and 14 km/ltr respectively. SX4 comes with safety features like dual front airbags, iCATS and crash impact door unlock.
Suspension and Braking System
Maruti SX4 has gas filled shock absorbers at its both ends while it features ventilated disc brakes at front and drum brakes at the back. The top variant comes with ABS with EBD and brake assist.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 Ride and Handling
The car is quite impressive in this department. The broad tyres and strong suspension system of SX4 holds it firmly on road and its wheelbase of 2500 mm adds stability to this car. There is slight body roll around corners due to its high ground clearance of 170 mm but that’s quite useful on our Indian roads. With precise braking system and accurate steering wheel, it’s quite easy to handle this car in city traffic.
Shades, Variants and Warranty
There are total seven variants of new SX4 which are available in six different colors. It comes with a warranty of 2years/40000 kilometres.
Verdict
Maruti SX4 ranges from INR 7.38 lakhs - 9.81 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi (approx., may vary)). The feature rich petrol version of SX4 sounds like a sensible deal as it feels powerful, responsive and comes with all new styling. We don’t recommend the overpriced diesel version of SX4 as it is underpowered and feels far behind than its competitors in terms of performance.
